Abstract
With the financial support of International Development Research Centre,
Canada, the Central Leather Research Institute, Madras, India undertook this
prestigious project in two phases. The first phase ran for three years from 1989 to
1992 and the second phase for 5 years i.e. from 1992 to 1997. Both the phases
focused on meat handling systems which carry forward the linkages of post
production systems concerning small ruminants. The goats and sheep which are called
small ruminants have been the source of livelihood to large number of people who
belong to lower economic strata in India. This socially significant resource ha.s not
received adequate attention from the point of view of utilisation and optimisation of
benefits. Phase I of the project focused on marketing of meat animals, production of
meat and its handling and marketing so as to understand and assess the prevailing
systems. In the Phase II, a model meat production system has been developed which
ensure enhanced returns to farmers, hygienic meat to consumers and quality skins to
leather industry.
