Abstract
The paper reports on the role of cultural capital (specifically cell phones) and the ways digital access can open up access to higher education. The case studies arise from long-term research on South African university students’ access to and use of ICTs for learning. Phases 1 and 2 of the project involved surveys of 6577 students from 6 universities in the Western Cape region and 3533 students in 6 different universities located in other regions of South Africa. Phase 3 (on which this chapter is based) is a qualitative study which adopts a nested case study approach.
