Abstract
In Kenya, smallholders are the main food producers and paradoxically, are also the most food insecure. The presentation provides an overview of a study undertaken in three rural locations in Kenya to determine how local household strategies and farmer innovations can be better supported and integrated into innovative systems. Adaptive strategies and innovations differ in time and by location, according to agroecological zones, season and even climate variability. Research and development as well as public policy must recognize and advocate for productivity-enhancing strategies and innovations inherent in smallholder farming systems.
