Abstract

Cochabamba is the 4th largest city in Bolivia, located in a valley in the Andes mountain range, 2500 metres above sea level. The presentation explores the relationship between the K'ara K'ara dumpsite operation and the growth of the settlements in its surroundings. Graphics and maps illustrate the analysis of informal settlements, along with information on socioeconomic vulnerabilities of residents. An environmental risk assessment details water contamination. The K’ara K’ara dumpsite and the informal settlements would not constitute threats if built with adequate infrastructure.
