Abstract
The paper establishes the extent to which women contribute to social and economic value-adding activities in the agriculture sector. Mainstreaming women in agricultural production requires a systemic understanding of the organization(s) of production and needs to be based on local geography, gender relations, and other local factors. Afghan women’s role in rural agricultural production needs to be differentiated from other rural value chains studies from around the world. For instance, even when women have come through the hurdles of working relatively independently of the men in their families, they are confronted with dismissal and being sidestepped by male traders.
