Abstract

After decades of authoritarian governments, countries of the region have managed to put democratic institutions back together, while inserting themselves into world markets, and mitigating the plights of individuals living in poverty. But serious social problems persist. The Latin American Center for Rural Development (Rimisp) presents the Latin American Report on Poverty and Inequality (2011). The Rural Territorial Dynamics Program, Rimisp and partners, analyzed census data and national surveys of households in 10,000 municipalities covering 400 million people living in 11 countries. The document describes territorial inequality and analyzes implications of these inequalities in public policies and their relation to institutional capacities.
