Abstract
The paper is divided into sections that focus on two aspects of the service economy: the definition and measurement of services and the determinants of growth of services. It discusses new trends in international trade that give prominence to international supply chains through widespread outsourcing and proposes a discussion on the role of services in Latin American development. It also presents some concluding remarks with indications of areas for further research.
