Abstract

Six communities in Sengwe Communal Lands, near Gonarezhou National Park and one community, Bennde Mutale, near Pufuri Gate of Kruger National Park, South Africa participated in the scenario planning process to collectively identify and manage their natural resources. They consolidated their plans into local ‘regional scenarios’ and these were subsequently presented to and adopted by the Chiredzi Rural District Council for inclusion into the district plan. Implementation of the scenario-planning project has resulted in a governance debate surrounding wildlife and benefit sharing arrangements. Scenario planning is a powerful tool useful to rural communities for generating local level plans for natural resources control.
