Abstract

The study aimed to improve the IDRC’s understanding of trends in funding for research provided by regional and sub-regional organisations, local philanthropic organisations, and public research funding mechanisms focusing on four countries: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana and Senegal. Considered in the study are public funds allocated by governments for research activities; funds from regional organisations such as the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU); the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS); funds from philanthropic bodies and Foundations, as well as other donors. Dependence on the modes of funding of international donor organisations continues.
