Abstract

The presentation by the Open Source Geospatial (OSGEO) foundation details some program applications developed as open source, such as NASA’s MapServer project. Originally developed in the 1990’s, MapServer is an open source platform for publishing spatial data and interactive mapping applications to the web. Another example is the Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL), a computer software library for reading and writing geospatial data formats released under the permissive X/MIT style free software license by OSGEO. The presentation provides details about ongoing geographic information systems (GIS) projects and their development.
