Abstract:
Research revealed that land and property watchdog groups (WDG) helped mitigate negative impacts of property violations on women and their families. The focus of the research was evaluation of WDGs capacity to ensure women’s land rights are protected, and that vulnerable members of the community can access justice, while the WDGs work in collaboration with government agencies. Widespread biases inherent to religious and customary laws effectively prevent many girls and women from owning, retaining or inheriting property in Kenya. Joint titling of land for married couples would give surviving spouses a measure of security against impacts of HIV-related deaths.
