Women Land access Trusts (WLATs)
Abstract
Women Land Access Trusts (WLATs) are fully registered Not-For-Profit Organizations in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ghana and Burundi. They act as financial intermediaries to assist the urban poor and especially poor women – to access land, housing, mortgage finance, and empowerment through improved livelihoods. Improved livelihoods are often a function of access to credit, affordable land, and appropriate housing. The presentation provides detailed information on land rights, customary law, land registration challenges, women’s representation and city council and land planning issues.
