Abstract

This Discussion Paper presents findings from a detailed enquiry into the determinants of value chain linkages in eight sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) countries (Angola, Botswana, Gabon, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa Tanzania, and Zambia) and six sectors (copper, diamonds, gold, oil and gas, mining services and timber). The research concludes that the extent of linkages varies due to the passage of time, the complexity of the sector, and the level of capabilities in the domestic economy. Related factors that determine the nature and pace of linkage development are explored. Policy is an important contextual factor affecting ownership, infrastructure and capabilities.
