Abstract
The article explores the driving forces behind biofuels production, specifically those that apply to biodiesel, and analyzes the Brazilian Biodiesel Policy and its potential for contribution toward sustainable development. The article aims to identify and elaborate upon the social and environmental aspects of sustainability that are present or absent within the National Programme for the Production and Use of Biodiesel (PNPB), namely: the social inclusion of family farmers; regional development; food security; influencing the carbon and energy balance of biodiesel; promotion of sustainable agricultural practices and diversity of feedstock.
