Abstract

Better data and data analysis will ensure that policies are informed by reality; for example basing policy on people’s access to food, rather than merely the country’s quantity of food supplies. Achieving food security remains a complex issue, crossing sectors such as agriculture, trade, health and environment and is affected by ongoing issues such as climate change, conflict, disasters, and urbanization. Information can be made more useful by using participatory-GIS methods to map food availability, accessibility, and utilization in relation to other sustainable livelihood indicators. This is the topic that is introduced in this issue of ICT4D.
