Abstract
The goal is more effective prevention of HIV transmission in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, where the Network’s Pietermaritzburg centre is located, there are segments of the population in which HIV prevalence has reached 45 percent. Each month, at the Lifeline Rape Crisis Centre in Poetermaritzburg, 100 rape victims present themselves for care and support. Thirty-six percent of them test positive for HIV. Barriers to conducting effective and preventative research in Africa can be overcome by building strong, sustainable partnerships. The CAPT Network shows that this sustainability can be achieved with a modest amount of basic infrastructure funding.
