Abstract

Publishing and Alternative Licensing Models in Africa (PALM Africa) explores how new licensing models could facilitate access and distribution of knowledge resources and learning materials in developing countries, especially in the African context. The study concluded that while a number of participating publishers were keen to explore flexible licensing, there are obstacles in the way of more widespread usage. Greater impact on access to and production of knowledge is dependent on the extent to which these obstacles are removed. Business models that exploit this potential are not yet sufficiently evolved to convince commercial book publishers to embrace them whole-heartedly.
