Abstract

The report summarizes key research and outputs of the APEIR (Asian Partnership on Emerging Infectious Disease Research) project implemented in China. The research surveyed 724 rural households in avian influenza (AI) affected areas in three provinces, according to the AI incidence level. Millions of small scale and backyard producers have been affected in Southeast Asian countries. The purpose of the study is to analyze socio-economic impacts of AI outbreaks and control measures on backyard and small-scale poultry producers, and their responses to AI control measures. Effective sector support policy would first target the small-scale commercial poultry producers.
