Abstract

Millions of women in India face severe constraints in reproductive rights with tremendous pressure to produce sons rather than daughters. This research explores funding of projects that support safe abortion, and the related issue of sex selection. Are donor resources for promoting reproductive rights adversely affected in terms of funding amount, leverage, and/or visibility, by donor priorities, and funding for work on sex selection? Recent demographic trends show falling fertility levels and increasingly skewed sex ratios. Interventions aimed at reducing sex selection must continue, while being cognizant of this fundamental overlap, so that women’s health and reproductive rights continue to be realized.
