Abstract

Thailand has promoted voluntary environmental programmes as a way for businesses to improve their environmental performance. This in-depth study provides information on the effectiveness of this approach in various economic sectors. It assesses the implementation of one of the most popular voluntary environmental schemes, ISO 14001. Sponsored by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the ISO 14001 program is overseen by local government agencies. The primary survey yielded replies from 495 manufacturing firms across three industries that produce a wide array of products. Roughly 38 percent had obtained ISO 14001 certification.
