Abstract
This study assesses the impacts of recent agricultural innovations in Vietnam on soil nutrients and soil erosion as well as on the income of local farm households. It develops a conservation policy, and measures the trade-off between soil conservation and household income if the policy is implemented. A land tax could be used to reduce environmental problems such as soil loss. However, this kind of tax will have a negative impact on farmers’ livelihoods. The study therefore recommends that farmers should be helped to implement innovations in animal husbandry so that their standard of living is not unduly affected.
