Abstract

Research findings show that the transfer of the ceramic industry from Foshan to Qingyuan would reduce the negative effects of air pollution largely due to the change in population density. The study examines environmental costs/benefits of the relocation of the pollution-intensive ceramics industry, from Foshan City (5.9 million) to Qingyuan City (3.6 million) in Guangdong Province. The cost of illness, the human capital approach and years lost due to disability were used to evaluate health costs/benefits. The relocation of ceramic production along with strict controls on emissions would constitute an effective use of environmental capacity.
