Abstract
This study examines the Alliance for Responsible Mining (ARM) fair trade gold initiative, and the Kimberley Process Certifications Scheme (KPCS) which serves to eliminate trade in conflict diamonds. These efforts are aimed at integrating ethics into production-supply chains. To reach its potential, ethical trade requires buy-in from producers, trading intermediaries, consumers and policy-makers. The study advocates for strategic learning within and between initiatives to increase opportunities towards sustainable international trade. Data was collected from global as well as local stakeholders, with field visits to Peru and Colombia and through a national case study of the KPCS in Sierra Leone.
