Abstract

This study examines the manufacturing sector over a sixteen-year period (1987-2003) in terms of employment, wages, and productivity, across firm sizes and major sectors of the manufacturing industry. A breakdown by sector and size shows that very large increases in productivity occurred generally across the Ghanaian manufacturing sector. There were substantial increases in labour productivity measured both by output per employee and value-added per employee. Wages in large firms employing more than 100 people more than doubled for all categories of workers.
