Abstract

Quarrying, drilling, blasting, breaking, loading and unloading, overhauling, crushing and screening: stone quarrying and crushing involves processes that create exposure to many physical, chemical and ergonomic hazards. The sector employs largely rural, migrant and unskilled workers (both men and women) and provides opportunities for primary employment as well as supplemental income for those involved in farming. Green belt development around stone crushing units has begun as a follow up on recommendations for air quality monitoring. This detailed report covers health risk assessment and capacity building programmes conducted during the project. Health surveillance in this community can be used to further mobilize intervention efforts.
