Abstract
The paper asserts that the political system in Algeria that emerged after independence (1962) was authoritarian and has remained so, despite cosmetic changes. It traces the political and economic history of Algeria from Independence to present day (2008), including Islamist party movements. A pseudo liberalization of the economy (1982) did not translate into political liberalization despite the loosening of economic austerity and a gentler discourse. Hamas, also know as the Movement for Islamic Society, was led by the most well know figure of Algerian Islamism, the late Mahfoud Nahnah (1942-2003).
