Abstract

Around Gubadida, the Meru National Park and the Bisan Adhi Game Reserve are two types of conservation areas that protect wildlife, but exclude local land users; they provide limited opportunity to earn income from tourism, although wildlife from these parks migrate through Gubadida. As an alternative, the community is developing a community conservancy which will build on their existing land management skills and generate income from tourism. Sustainable development in the drylands depends on enabling people to manage unpredictability. This will require flexibility, and to support indigenous knowledge and the skills of rural people, including as well, a meaningful role for customary institutions.
