Abstract
This detailed report indicates that vector control strategies based only on insecticide use in the Gran Chaco region have limited short-term impact. Families were not aware of their vulnerability to Chagas disease. The occurrence of “hot-spots” of transmission is highly relevant for public health interventions. The project’s intervention activities interrupted peri-domestic T. cruzi transmission, and demonstrated that standard operating procedures conducted by national vector control programs are unable to eliminate T. infestans in the study region. The origins of pyrethroid resistance in T. infestans populations in two of the three study sites remain uncertain.
