Abstract
Many changes are taking place in rainfed farming systems globally. Changes include increasing population growth, declining holding sizes, and out-migration of mainly men to urban centres and foreign countries in search of supplementary incomes. Policies that facilitate land titles to encourage the use of remittances in land improvement investment are crucial to development. The report includes an analysis of the impact of male migration on women’s work and agricultural development and livelihoods in marginal and poor areas in Syria, in different farming systems (irrigated versus rainfed) and agro-ecological conditions.
