Abstract
The resistance to genetically modified (GM) foods is not adequately discussed between government and non-government actors. Public resources are being spent on developing a wide range of genetically engineered products in the absence of laws on labeling and liability. This paper provides an overview of a three-year research study including stakeholder consultations in India, where results of the study were discussed with a broad cross section of stakeholders. Nine themes emerged and are elaborated upon, including crop yields, risks and benefits, testing, use of animal genes, accuracy of information, consumer attitudes and media involvement.
