Workshop on study for the Association of African Universities (AAU) of optical fibre for research and higher education networks in western and central Africa
Abstract
Boradband is available to academic institutions in West and Central Africa, with more fiber being planned and rolled out. However the policy and regulatory frameworks of the communications market are not adapted to facilitate development of National Research and Education Networks (NRENs). The market is still a high price/low volume one with limited competition for supply of Internet and telecommunication services. At the same time there is a lack of awareness by policy makers of the demand and supply of connectivity, and the policy, regulatory and financial challenges facing academic and research institutions. The report covers workshop presentations and discussions.
