Diversification of household livelihood strategies for tobacco small-holder farmers : a case study of introducing bamboo in South Nyanza region, Kenya

Abstract

The program investigates sustainability of traditional and modern household livelihood strategies of tobacco farmers, and possible diversification through the introduction of bamboo as an alternative crop in the region. The research aims to promote local application of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). The study indicates that though most households engage in tobacco farming to improve standards of living, it seems to add little or no difference to their livelihood when compared to non-tobacco households. As well, bamboo grows in soil, agro-climatic and topographical conditions similar to those of tobacco and earns 4-5 times more in terms of income.
