Abstract
Historically, multisector efforts intended to simultaneously address agriculture and nutrition have been hindered by institutional barriers and insufficient resources. The report analyzes lessons learned in relation to agricultural interventions that influence nutrition outcomes in low- and middle-income countries. Common elements that appear to contribute to the success of programs include a strong behavioral change component, careful consideration of local contexts, partnership building with community members to promote ownership, and a specific focus on women’s empowerment. Household production for the household’s own consumption is the most fundamental and direct pathway to greater food availability and food security.
