Abstract

Privacy is recognised in the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 12. This journal article provides insight into the uses and abuses of personal data at various scales locally and internationally. With technologies stretching across borders, similar and familiar methods of repression and oppression are ongoing, which cannot be dismissed on the grounds of cultural difference. Under the auspices of “security” much damage can be done to personal liberty. Through data “leaks” and breaches people are becoming more aware of how their lives can be “hacked.” The author advocates for data privacy regulation.
