Forced migration of Colombians : a comparative study on fear, historical memory and social representations in Colombia, Ecuador and Canada

Abstract

The presentation covers aspects of the study methodology, the complex issues of displacement including as a strategy of war, public policy in the three countries, social suffering and structural violence, and regimes of fear. The detailed study compares two types of forced migration of Colombians: internal displacement in Colombia and refugees from Colombia in Ecuador and Canada. It examines how social fears, historical memory and social representations of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees affect their integration into new social environments, along with responses from host populations to their presence.
