Workshop on NARS reconstruction in post-Conflict States, Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, 3rd to 5th October, 2007

Abstract

Countries in active conflict or post-conflict situations live with devastating consequences on their National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS). The workshop was held for eight member states (Congo Brazzaville, Cote d’Ivoire, Central African Republic, Democratic republic of Congo, Guinea Bissau, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Chad) whose national agricultural research systems require reconstruction and rehabilitation. Key elements of a generic framework to guide the process were identified, and recommendations were made on next steps. Conflict situations result in huge losses, including destruction of animals and plant materials along with data and decades of research; with loss of human resources through death or expatriation or forced displacements.
