Final report : a joint project of the Centre for Environment, Agriculture and Development (CEAD), School of Environmental Sciences, at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) (Pietermaritzburg Campus), South Africa, and the School of Environmental Studies and the Southern African Research Centre at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario (Queen's)

Abstract

This project focused on the development of knowledge in relation to the ecosystem approach to human health in urban South Africa. Issues of concern for the research team are the rapid growth of Informal Settlements (IS) within urban and peri-urban areas, as well as environmental injustice across race and class as expressed through the urban geography legacy of Apartheid. These remain important contextual issues that inform historical and contemporary understandings of urban problems. The project thus includes historical research (archival and interview-based) into the racial geography and environmental injustice in Pietermaritzburg (PMB), now called Msunduzi municipality.
