Abstract
A vibrant advanced research and education environment is now recognized as a sine qua non for sustainable national development. A survey of the region shows that while some African governments have woken up to this fact, others continue in a state of slumber, perhaps consigning their countries to marginalization. In this issue, Kenya, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda are highlighted, with more countries to be covered in the next issue. UbuntuNet Alliance is the regional backbone network that interconnects National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) and connects them to other regional networks. The newsletter presents information, updates and events.
