Abstract

This document summarizes the contribution of 11 studies that respond to possible outcomes of the global financial crisis (2008/2009) and how it affects the rural poor of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Paraguay and Peru. The majority of countries chose to increase spending or public investment rather than reduce taxes or increase direct subsidies. The paper concludes with proposals towards an agenda of actions to reduce rural poverty, not just interventions to mitigate the effects of the crisis.
