Abstract

The objective of the workshop was to create awareness of the potential for community fibre optic deployment to meet connectivity needs in rural areas, and to explore and identify relevant policy interventions that can promote the development of community fibre networks in commercially non-viable areas. Capacity building through schools, universities and telecentre networks was discussed. Impressive ICT pilot projects in Wami (a local Masai village) and the Chalinze district were visited, where the internet is sourced from the community fibre network.
