Abstract
This paper scrutinizes the capacity of farmer-to-processor linkages in Africa, in order to foster the effectiveness of agricultural growth for poverty reduction, take advantage of untapped sources of growth, and to generate pro-poor development through adequate institutions. Contract farming is one arrangement that operates as an intermediary institution between spot markets and vertical integration. The report stresses the importance of contract farming with agro-processing companies and the barriers to entry for small-scale farmers. Securing pro-poor relationships between farmers and agro-processors will rely on institutions at large, not on contract agriculture exclusively.
