Abstract
Sustainable agricultural systems tend to have a positive effect on natural, social and human capital, whilst unsustainable ones feed back to deplete assets. There is surprisingly little data on the environmental and health costs imposed by agriculture on other sectors, although new research suggests that all types of agricultural systems impose some kinds of costs on the environment. This report reviews developments in agroecological approaches to health and sustainability, including effects on carbon balance, water use efficiency, labour markets, migration, and reproductive health. The overarching priority of development assistance should be to put the idea of sustainability at the centre of agricultural policies.
