Abstract

Fish traders and associated business operators are widespread in coastal centres in Tanzania, responding to well-established artisanal fisheries. However, the small-scale traders are poorly organized and have limited business skills to operate effectively and efficiently; levies are arbitrarily set and fishers spend too much time sorting out which levies and licenses they need. Fish markets are highly unreliable so fish prices fluctuate and make it difficult to plan business effectively. A national coastal community workshop was held in Tanga in 2008. The Biashara group gave their views, aims, activities and issues of concern at this meeting, along with recommendations.
