Abstract
Policies governing marine resources are often conflicting and provide overlapping mandates among statutory institutions. The objective of community workshops is to enhance knowledge on the contribution of biodiversity conservation to livelihoods, and to assist communities in demonstrating to politicians and senior policy makers this importance. Community representatives reflect on the status of the marine environment and put forward concrete recommendations on improving marine resources, livelihood sustainability and enhancement. For instance policies and laws in Kenya need to be written in both English and Kiswahili so that local communities can comprehend them.
