Abstract

The workshop addresses five major themes: livelihoods (wealth creation, poverty reduction); natural resource governance (rights, equity including gender, devolution); market chains and value addition; natural resource economics and national accounting; emerging issues (including invasive species, climate change and adaptation, GMOs, Carbon trade, “food miles”, pandemics such as HIV/AIDS, effects of globalization, conflict and insecurity). Many governments in the region do not incorporate environment and natural resources into their economics and national accounting systems, to the detriment of environmental assets, when the reality is that most of GDP is natural resource based. The report provides coverage of conference presentations and activities.
