Abstract
This background paper presents a set of perspectives that may in turn serve to guide discussion and planning with a view to developing a richer view of what the research agenda into traditional medicine might incorporate. Examples from a range of cultural and regional settings are offered as reference points for further elaboration and modification for local application. The broad themes addressed are:
·traditional theories and taxonomies for explaining health, illness & for selecting treatments and understanding outcomes
·public health dimensions of traditional medicine that merit investigation and evaluation ·priority diseases, such as malaria and HIV/AIDS, as well as common illnesses of importance to the general public, and some of the potential for further work in these areas.
