Abstract

In terms of urban planning decisions, the lesson to Jakarta was that Vancouver has said no to freeways in the city. Amid fierce opposition from environmentalists, Jakarta is currently considering six segments of toll road cutting through its heart, along with multistorey parking garages in public green spaces. The article compares planning perspectives of Jakarta and Vancouver. The Greater Vancouver Region consists of 21 municipalities that form a regional partnership to take care of water, transit, waste management, and emergency response while benefiting from economies of scale. Jakarta is about to embark on a similar venture with its surrounding districts.
