Abstract
Kampala grew out of a rural agricultural setting, but, in some quarters, agriculture is seen as an impediment to the continued growth of the city. There has been a push from developed countries for Uganda to adopt genetically modified (GM) crops, but so far this has been resisted. A field visit to a community grown urban orchard which includes an organic garden of indigenous locally grown species, demonstrated to the Uganda team that Africa should not necessarily abandon its own varieties in favour of GM crops.
