Abstract
This paper shares findings from the first stage of a larger investigation regarding the links between economic development and ICT use in urban micro-enterprises in India. A multi-stage probability sample was employed to gather benchmark data about the use of ICTs by urban micro-enterprises. The paper explains the process by which the sample was designed and finalized through a field visit in Mumbai. It also describes how the survey questionnaire was developed and conducted with micro-entrepreneurs in New Delhi. The study focuses on three widely-diffused ICTs: mobiles phones, computers and Internet cafés.
