Abstract
This paper looks at the overall supply chain of fibre connectivity to Universities in the UbuntuNet region. It provides an overview assessment of the conditions of telecom connectivity in 20 African countries, including industrial operators involved in the expansion of fibre networks. Three major submarine cables are currently being deployed (2009) to offer east and southern African countries with much needed cheap connectivity. The key gaps in access are found in the absence of regional connectivity that can link landlocked countries, and cross-border connections between neighbouring nations.
